Airline worker takes religious discrimination case to High Court

by Aaron J Leichman, Christian PostPosted: Thursday, January 21, 2010, 18:25 (GMT)

A British Airways check-in worker who refused to hide her cross necklace at work went to London's High Court on Tuesday in a bid to force the airline to admit it was wrong in demanding she stop wearing her necklace.

Nadia Eweida, 56, became embroiled in a highly public row with BA in 2006 after the airline asked that she tuck her cross necklace behind her scarf so that it would not show.

Eweida took BA to an employment tribunal, claiming the airline had discriminated against Christians by not allowing them to openly wear symbols of their faith while Muslim and Hindu employees were permitted to wear headscarves and turbans.

After a public backlash and widespread criticism from politicians and church leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, BA changed its uniform policy to allow crosses on chains to be worn openly.

Despite the change, Eweida wants BA to acknowledge the old policy amounted to religious discrimination, and she is seeking £120,000 pounds in damages and lost wages for the roughly three months she was kept off the job.

Two years ago, however, the tribunal panel ruled that Eweida was treated the same as any other employee would have been if they had broken the uniform policy.

The ruling, according to Mairi Clare, spokeswoman for human rights group Liberty, set "quite a dangerous precedent for people who want to express their religion".

A High Court judgment is expected in the coming weeks.

Christians of Egypt are Massacred, and President Mubarak is Still Silent

by Staff
January 21, 2010

WASHINGTON, (christiansunite.com) -- The Copts, Egypt's Christian minority, number approximately 12 million, about 15% of Egypt's population. Under the rule of President Mubarak, violent attacks against them run rampant. These attacks were once carried out mainly by organized Islamic terrorist groups. The climate of hatred in Egypt has worsened to the point that attacks against Christians are now carried out by their Muslim neighbors.

The latest attack took place in Naga Hamady, Upper Egypt, during the late hours of Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Drive-by gunmen opened fire from machineguns at worshippers coming out of church after celebrating Coptic Christmas mass. Seven people were instantly killed, and many others were seriously wounded.

The escalation of attacks is encouraged by the Egyptian government's lack of resolve in addressing the problem and adopting a plan of action to stop it at its roots. The climate of hatred is deeply entrenched in Egypt's mosques, the Egyptian media and the Egyptian educational system. Very seldom are killers of Copts apprehended, and when arrested, they are often released for lack of evidence, or given a very light sentence.

President Mubarak, now in power for almost 3 decades, during which 7 American presidents took office, turns a blind eye to what happens to the Coptic citizens of his country. This seems to be an attempt at appeasing the Islamists to strengthen his hold on power and pass it on to his son. Not once, did President Mubarak address his nation assuring the Copts that he cares about their problems.

Egypt, the recipient of 2 billion dollars yearly of American foreign aid since the signing of the Camp David peace treaty in1978, can not continue abusing the human rights of its Coptic Christian citizens, a basic perquisite for receiving American foreign aid.

We ask President Obama, the US Congress and government officials, and all freedom-loving people and organizations in the US and around the world to support the right of the Copts, for protection from aggression and equality under the law.

The American Coptic community will hold a rally in support of the Copts, Christians of Egypt, on Thursday 21, 2010 from 11:00AM to 2:00PM in front of the main gate of the White House, and from 2:30 to 3:00PM in front of the Egyptian Embassy.

Brown Victory a WIN for Women

by Staff
January 21, 2010

WASHINGTON, (christiansunite.com) -- In response to the victory by Republican candidate Scott Brown in the Massachusetts special election to fill the Senate seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser offered the following statement:

"On the heels of last fall's victories by Bob McDonnell and Chris Christie, Scott Brown's victory is just the beginning of the consequences Congressional incumbents will face this November. Anyone who votes to advance health care legislation that funds abortion on-demand should consider themselves on notice.

"The election of Scott Brown is no accident. This election is about more than parties or candidates. The election is just one more sign of the overreach of the President and Congress. The American people have spoken tonight.

"Further, Martha Coakley's defeat is not a setback for women in politics, it is a victory. Scott Brown's success is a win for the majority of American women who demand authentic representation that reflects commonsense pro-life views, like abortion funding restrictions and conscience protections.

"Martha Coakley's extreme embrace of abortion may have endeared her to EMILY's List and the abortion lobby, but it did little to win votes. Abortion is never good for women, and it should never be a legitimate aspect of any 'health care' debate.

"Over the past week, the Susan B. Anthony List has mobilized women across the country to communicate the reality that abortion is not health care. We traveled across the Midwest, meeting countless women who countered the feminist mantra that our nation 'needs' abortion in health care reform.

"The message is clear, abortion is not health care. Americans should not be forced to fund it, and medical providers of faith should not be forced to participate in it. The people of Massachusetts deserve a Senator who affirms Constitutional rights for all, not one who puts a radical ideology above the right of conscience. Scott Brown promised to keep abortion out of health care on the campaign trail, and the Susan B. Anthony List looks forward to working with him to accomplish that goal."

To see a candidate comparison from Massachusetts Citizens for Life that outlines Scott Brown and Martha Coakley's positions on Life, go to www.masscitizensforlife.org/comparison.html .

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of Americans, over 280,000 residing in all 50 states, dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process. www.sba-list.org

This is Now the World's Pro-Life March!' International Pro-Life Leaders Come to US Capitol to Protest Aggressive US Anti-Life Policies

by Staff
January 19, 2010

FRONT ROYAL, Va., (christiansunite.com) -- International Pro-Life leaders from Africa, Europe, South America, Asia and Oceania have come to the nation's capitol to stand in solidarity with their American brothers and sisters and protest the radical expansion of anti-life policies under the Obama administration. They will speak at a conference on January 22 at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C. before joining the hundreds of thousands of other pro-lifers in the March for Life.

"America's March for Life is now the world's March for Life," said Joseph Meaney, Director of International Coordination for Human Life International (HLI). "It has become the world's pro-life protest because of the aggressive promotion of abortion and population control that is now official policy of the United States, thanks to the administration of President Barack Obama."

"This is not only the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which has led to the destruction of almost 50 million American children," said Dr. Ligaya Acosta, HLI Regional Coordinator for Asia and Oceania. "This is now the anniversary of President Obama's allowing Americans' taxpayer funds to be used to promote abortion and other assaults on life in my own country of the Philippines, in Africa, in China... all over the world where 40 million babies are killed every year. It is wrong and we are here to tell him and Congress to stop paying to kill our children!"

Dr. Acosta was referring to President Obama's January 23rd, 2009 reversal of the Mexico City Policy, which had, under the Reagan and both Bush administrations, restricted the use of federal funds to support any organization that promoted or performed abortion abroad. In December, this reversal allowed Congress to pass an omnibus spending bill, signed by President Obama, which included almost $ 700 million for abortion-promoting organizations internationally.

"We are tired of the arrogant American government trying to tell us how many children we should have," said Emil Hagamu, HLI's regional coordinator for English-speaking Africa. "President Obama is of Kenyan descent. How can he do this to his own people?"

"These aggressive policies are undeniably hurting America's stature with the people of the world, even if they help America appeal to the cruel international elites who want to run everything," said Raymond DeSouza, HLI's coordinator for Portuguese-speaking nations. "When international aid is tied to abortion, it's like holding a nation hostage, telling them that children are bad, which translates into hopelessness for the future. This is a terrible violence against the families and children of the developing world."

Information on HLI's "The Fight for Life Around the World" mini-conference can be found at www.hli.org/index.php/component/content/749? task=view.

HLI's International Regional Coordinators will be available for interviews around the time of the March for Life on January 22.

Two Women Rescued From Ruins in Haiti

19 January 2010 , 13:08
The first rescue operation by the IDF delegation in Haiti

IDF rescue teams aid in the surprising rescue operation six days after the earthquake

On Monday night (Jan. 18), the search and rescue teams of the IDF delegation in Haiti helped with the rescue of two female students who had been buried under the ruins of the university in Port-au-Prince. This rescue operation was carried out on the day that the Home Front Command had decided to cease searching for victims, since it was estimated that there would be a zero percent chance of finding survivors.

One of the doctors in the delegation, Lt. Col. Tarif Bader, told Israel Army Radio about the rescue operation which succeeded against all odds. According to him, the team was returning from an unsuccessful rescue mission of a six year old girl among the ruins of the city, when they ran into the rescue teams from Russia and Nicaragua who asked them for their assistance. The Israeli team joined the others and aided with the rescue of the two women who were between 25 and 30 years old.

Lt. Col.Bader, who serves as the head of the pediatrics station in the IDF field hospital in Haiti, says that one of the rescued women was only lightly injured, while the other woman suffered a hip fracture and severe bruising. The first student received medical treatment by the rescue teams on the scene, and the more severely injured woman was transferred to the IDF field hospital.

Since the rescue team did not have a vehicle to evacuate the injured, Maj. Amir Ben-David and Cpt. Shlomi Ben-Yair from the Home Front Command stopped a local vehicle and transferred her to the hospital in it. Lt. Col. Bader concludes that "it's not something you experience every day. You leave for one of the destruction areas in the city and you don't expect to find someone alive, the excitement was great. Now, despite the excitement, we have to continue working".

The local media has reported that eighty percent of the buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyed by the earthquake. Up to this point, ninety thousand dead victims have been uncovered from the ruins.

43,000 people call for religious freedom in Eritrea

by Jenna LylePosted: Sunday, January 17, 2010, 15:58 (GMT)

A petition calling for religious freedom for Eritrea’s Christians has received more than 43,000 signatures.

The petition was handed in to the Eritrean Embassy and 10 Downing Street by the former bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali, patron of persecution ministry Release International.

Mr Nazir-Ali said: “We want to assure the government of Eritrea that Christians are loyal citizens and present no danger to the integrity of the Eritrean nation.

“We are appealing to the government of Eritrea to allow all Christians freedom of assembly, worship and expression.”

Eritrea has been a major campaign focal point for Release International in the last few months. It says more than 2,000 Christians have been imprisoned by the government for their faith, some placed in underground cells or shipping containers where temperatures are freezing during the night and soaring during the day.

As part of the campaign, Release published the book Song of the Nightingale, the first-hand account of gospel singer Helen Berhane who was incarcerated in a shipping container, where she endured terrible conditions, and was beaten by the Eritrean authorities.

It believes tens of thousands of people have fled the country to neighbouring Sudan, Ethiopia and Yemen, passing through crocodile-infested rivers and minefields and running the risk of being shot by border guards who are under orders to shoot on sight anyone attempting to flee the country.

“Those we speak to love their country and want nothing more than to live in freedom as good citizens,” said Andy Dipper, the CEO of Release International, which serves the persecuted church worldwide.

“Yet many are being hounded out, jailed and tortured for no other reason than their Christian faith.

“Our message to Eritrea is stop the brutality. We’re calling on Eritrea to honour the right to freedom of religion, guaranteed under its own constitution.”

Eritrean Christians who were tortured and jailed for their faith have told their harrowing stories in the latest edition of Release magazine.

One prisoner, Hzkias, was chained and kept in solitary confinement in a tiny pitch-black cell for five months. He said he "looked like another creature" when he was finally let out, with long hair and nails.

"My body colour was yellow," he said.

A Christian activist documenting persecution in Eritrea, and named in the magazine only as Hanibal, reported that authorities were torturing and killing Christians.

He said: "Christians are treated like animals."

Release is helping Eritrean refugees start their own small businesses, and is supporting churches in refugee camps by giving them Bibles and Christian resources.

$10,000 Reward Offered to Abortion Whistleblowers

by Staff
January 18, 2010

WICHITA, Kans., (christiansunite.com) -- Operation Rescue announced today that it is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of abortionists who are breaking the law.

The campaign, known as Abortion Whistleblowers, is encouraging abortion clinic workers and others to come forward and tell what they know about abortion clinic abuses.

The Abortion Whistleblowers campaign will include a series of ads on the radio and on sites like Craig's List, Facebook, Youtube, and other social networking sites. It will also include direct mailings to each abortion clinic in the nation encouraging workers to come forward.

Last year, several former employees of late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart came forward to tell media and pro-life groups of illegal activity at Carhart's Bellevue, Nebraska clinic. Three of them filed affidavits with the State Attorney General's office and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, resulting in investigations of Carhart.

Other whistleblowers, including former clinic patients, have successfully come forward to tell of illegal acts, resulting in the following:

After years of exposure by Operation Rescue, at least nine victims of illegal abortionist Bertha Bugarin came forward. Bugarin is currently serving 6 years, 8 months for committing illegal abortions in two California counties. Three of her accomplices were also convicted. Bugarin had preyed on vulnerable women in Hispanic neighborhoods. Her chain of six abortion clinics is closed.

Employees of a business next door to a San Ysidro, CA, abortion clinic operated by Suresh Gandotra tipped off a newsman about an ambulance that had come to the clinic to transport an injured women. She later died injuries so horrific that the abortionist fled the country fearing murder charges. His dangerous abortion clinic closed.

Thirty-five women were involved in bringing 65 charges sexual abuse against Phoenix abortionist Brian Finkle. Seventy additional women came forward but were not part of the prosecution. Finkle, who was responsible for 20% of all abortions done in Arizona, is currently serving 35 years in prison for his crimes.

"We have yet to find an abortion clinic that complies with all laws," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "We are encouraging clinic workers, former abortion patients, or anyone else who has knowledge that crimes have committed been at abortion clinics to contact us immediately. Their information could literally save lives and earn them a $10,000 reward."

Information about how to participate is available at www.operationrescue.org, along with a video describing the program and a flyer that has already been sent to every abortion clinic in the country.

About Operation Rescue
Operation Rescue is one of the leading pro-life Christian activist organizations in the nation and has become a strong voice for the pro-life movement in America. Operation Rescue is now headquartered in a former abortion clinic that it bought and closed in 2006. From there, Operation Rescue launches its innovative new strategies across the nation, exposing and closing abortion clinics through peaceful, legal means. Its activities are on the cutting edge of the abortion issue, taking direct action to stop abortion and ultimately restore legal personhood to the pre- born in obedience to biblical mandates.
