Senator Reid says mosque shouldn't be built near ground zero

Breaking from President Obama, top Democrat says despite First Amendment, mosque should not be built near site of 9/11 attacks

WASHINGTON - The Senate's top Democrat says a mosque should not be built near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada on Monday became the highest-profile Democrat to break with President Barack Obama, who on Friday backed the right for the developers to build a mosque near ground zero.

In a statement, Reid said the First Amendment protects freedom of religion and he respects that, but the mosque should be built somewhere else.

Critics have said the location of the mosque is insensitive because the terrorists who struck were Islamic extremists.

The plan to build a mosque and Muslim cultural center not far from ground zero in Manhattan has irked the Right. Many Republicans, including former Alaskan governor, Sarah Palin, are working hard, and with significant success, to place the issue on the public agenda ahead of the mid-term elections on November 2.

Reid is in a tight campaign for re-election in Nevada. His opponent, Republican Sharron Angle, earlier in the day called for Reid to say whether he agreed with Obama.

Palin, Bloomberg Spar over NYC Mosque Plans

Plans to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City is stirring a heated back and forth between two prominent political figures.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is speaking out against the project as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending the plans against her comments.

Palin has joined the opposition against the Cordoba House mega mosque center set to be built in New York City.

This week on the social networking site Twitter, Palin charged the mosque plans were an emotionally slap to the 9/11 victims.

"Peace-seeking Muslims, [please] understand, [the] Ground Zero mosque is unnecessary provocation; it stabs hearts," she said.

The post brought a response from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who defended the project.

"Sarah Palin has a right to her opinions, but I could not disagree more. Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness," he said.

"And I think it's a great message for the world that, unlike in other places where they might actually ban people from wearing a burqa or they might actually keep people from building a building, that's not what America was founded on. Nor is it what America should become."

Since approval for the Cordoba House center passed, New Yorkers already had plenty of passion about the idea of a mosque at Ground Zero.

"This house of evil will be the birthplace of the next terrorist event," one New York resident said.

"Why should there be a Muslim place here? No, I don't support it," another added.

"In some ways it raises the very question of what is at the heart of all of this furor and that is ignorance," said Daisy Khan, spokeswoman for the Cordoba Mosque project.

Retired Gen. Jerry Boykin believes American ignorance about Muslim history could come back to haunt the U.S.

"When Mohammed conquered Mecca, he built a mosque on their most holy and prominent site. The message was Islam reigns supreme," Boykin said.

"When he conquered Jerusalem, he did the same thing [at] the most prominent site in Jerusalem, the most holy site," he said. "Now, we are going to build a mosque at Ground Zero, where once the Twin Towers were a great monument to America. Now there will be a mosque there."

"What's the message in that and what's the impact it's going to have on the Islamic world?" Boykin went on to ask. "It will increase the recruiting to the jihadist cause exponentially."

The Cordoba House is named for the city in Spain where Muslims began their conquest of the West in the eighth century.

Sarah Palin meets Billy Graham

by Jennifer Riley, Christian Post

Sarah Palin meets Billy Graham

Sarah Palin met evangelist Billy Graham for dinner at his home on Montreat, North Carolina, on Sunday.

The two were joined by Franklin Graham, who had extended the invitation to Palin last winter after the two delivered aid together in Alaska, Anne Graham Lotz, and Palin’s parents, Chuck and Sally Heath, her aunt Katie Johnson, daughter Piper, and son Trig.

During their meeting, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee spoke of her spiritual journey and her life in Alaska. Meanwhile, the famed evangelist, who has counselled countless presidents and politicians, shared his memories of preaching in Anchorage, Alabama, in 1984.

“It was an honour having Governor Palin and her family in our home this evening,” said Billy Graham in a statement. “I, like many people, have been impressed with her strong commitment to her faith, to family and love of country.”

Franklin Graham told The Charlotte Observer that his father has followed Palin’s career and “likes her strong stand on faith”.

“Daddy feels God was using her to wake America up,” Graham said.

Palin also felt privileged to meet Billy Graham, calling it “a once-in-a-lifetime honour”.

The elder Graham signed Bibles for all of Palin’s family members present for the dinner and signed two for her – one small travel-size Bible and a large New King James version, according to the Observer.

They also prayed together.

“Life in the spotlight is not easy and I pray that whatever lies ahead for this family that their faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, would remain strong and that God would put a hedge or protection around her and all those she holds dear,” Graham said.

This was the first time Palin and Billy Graham met.

In February, then Alaska Governor Palin had teamed up with Franklin Graham and the humanitarian group he heads, Samaritan’s Purse, to deliver 44,000 pounds of food to families along the Yukon River who were hit by an unusually harsh winter.

Palin’s stop in Montreat was en route to the next city on her book tour. She is scheduled to stop at Fort Bragg in eastern North Carolina on Monday to promote her memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life.

Josh McDowell challenges Palin and Oprah to discuss abortion, morality

Best-selling author Josh McDowell has released insightful tidbits on abortion and morality for former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as she prepares for her highly anticipated interview with Oprah on November 16.

Last month McDowell and co-author Dave Sterrett of Probe Ministries released the new book O God: A Dialogue on Truth and Oprah's Spirituality that chronicles two women who grapple with belief systems endorsed by Oprah and her spiritual teachers.

"Does Oprah believe in shrinking the role of religion in America, given the Obama administration's views on separation of church and state?" is among a variety of questions and advice McDowell and Sterrett propose that Palin take up with Oprah. The open letter was released Sunday on WorldNetDaily.

Oprah, who openly supported an Obama presidency over the Republican presidential team of McCain/Palin, has billed the interview as an opportunity to discuss Palin's forth-coming book, Going Rogue: An American Life, which has already skyrocketed to No 1 on Amazon weeks before its release. But McDowell hopes the two women will also cover big issues.

"Although, I'm not sure exactly what will be included in the interview, I hope that Sarah will continue to take the stand that the basis of morality is the nature and character of God, the Creator, that human life begins at conception and that every person is created in the image of God," wrote McDowell.

McDowell and Sterrett, who admit they respect Oprah's tireless work on behalf of children around the world, say they disagree with her ideas about moral relativism.

"I hope that Sarah, like Martin Luther King Jr, will share that morality is ultimately dependent on God - rather than individuals or cultures," McDowell continued. "Martin Luther King Jr once said, 'Some things in this universe are absolute. The God of the universe has made it so. And so long as we adopt a relative attitude toward right and wrong, we're revolting against the very laws of God himself.'"

"Regardless of individual thoughts on Sarah Palin or Oprah Winfrey, there is very little doubt that this interview is anticipated to receive very high rankings and will capture the attention of many Americans," McDowell said.

Josh McDowell has authored or co-authored 118 books, including More Than a Carpenter, which has sold 15 million copies in 85 languages. His book, New Evidence That Demands a Verdict, was named one of the 20th century's top 40 books and one of the 13 most influential books of the last 50 years on Christian thought by World magazine.
